‘People’s Garden’ Provides Fresh Vegetables for Food Pantries in Cape May County
Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Cape May County’s Master Gardeners are making a difference in Cape May County by helping to make fresh vegetables available to those in need. Rutgers Master Gardeners planted over 1,600 plants in June at the “People’s Garden” located on the grounds of the US Department of Agriculture Plant Material Center, Natural Resources Conservation Service, 1536 Route 9, Cape May Court House, NJ. Jerry McManus, Rutgers Master Gardener and Coordinator of the “People’s Garden”, said, “Cape May County’s Rutgers Master Gardeners are happy to put their expertise and passion to use and plant a variety of vegetables in the garden, especially knowing that everything planted in the garden is helping residents less fortunate in the County.”

Rutgers Gardens, an oasis that draws thousands for classes, weddings and walks in the woods, is about to receive a rare honor and is on the cusp of a major facelift as it celebrates its centennial… “There is a huge demand for public space, public gardens, nature, greenery,” said Bruce Crawford, director since 2005, in a news release. “I know that we could easily get to a quarter million visitors in 20, 30 years, if things go like we think they’re going, so we have to plan for that.”

Consumer survey tallies GMO reaction
A new biotechnology disclosure law allows food producers to use digital codes rather than product labels to inform consumers that certain foods contain genetically modified ingredients… Nearly half of Americans say they would be much less likely or somewhat less likely to purchase a food product if they learned it contained genetically modified ingredients… “The statements mean both the participants in the survey and Americans in general because the results obtained from survey participants are used to project to the U.S. population,” said William Hallman, a visiting scholar at the Annenberg Public Policy Center and professor in the department of human ecology at Rutgers University. “Because the survey participants are representative of the U.S. population, the percentages in the statement represent the percentages of Americans in general who would have responded similarly had we had the opportunity to interview all 320 million of them.”

Hot enough for you? New Jersey has dealt with far worse summers
It may feel like the complete opposite when you step outside, but this summer in New Jersey isn’t that hot. At least not when you compare it to more than 120 years of weather records for the state. According to State Climatologist David Robinson at Rutgers University, summer 2016 so far has been “warm.” “It has not been a record-breaking summer and it’s not likely to be,” Robinson told New Jersey 101.5.
