Sarah Ralston, professor in the Department of Animal Sciences, was recently identified as one of the Top 15 Vet Nutrition Professors in a survey conducted by VetTechColleges.com. Criteria for selection of the Top 15 included candidates having both veterinary and Ph.D. degrees, Board certification in Veterinary Nutrition, plus extensive teaching and publications in the field of animal nutrition. Of the professors to make the top 15 list, Ralston is the only one who specializes in equine nutrition. She previously served in a variety of roles on the Board of the American College of Veterinary Nutrition, including being its first female chair and president in the late 1990s. Her accomplishments were recently acknowledged with the award of a Fulbright Scientific Mobility Scholarship to teach Equine Clinical Nutrition at the Veterinary School at the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Only two other Rutgers faculty members were awarded a Fulbright for 2013-2014 and of the total 36 Fulbright awards given for agriculture, Ralston is the only veterinarian to be working with horses. The Fulbright lectures will be given in Portuguese; Ralston grew up in Brazil and is fluent in that language. While in Braziol, she will also be doing research on the effect of intestinal parasites on digestion in horses, funded in part by ZOETIS, LLC.
