In an effort to convert a 6th Ward warehouse into a center for assisting start-up food businesses, the City of Paterson has awarded a $70,000 consulting contract to a Rutgers-based group. Paterson already has allocated more than $2 million for the project, including $1.3 million in federal community development funds to buy the building at 163-177 Pennsylvania Avenue. Included in the $2 million already allocated is $700,000 in federal money to acquire equipment for the program. The contract with the Rutgers Food Innovation Center will help the city determine the scope of the program and how it will operate…”We are very excited to have been given the opportunity to assist the City of Paterson in moving forward with this project,” said Lou Cooperhouse, director of the Rutgers food center.

RutgersX, the food accelerator at the Rutgers Food Innovation Center (FIC), announced today their 2015 cohort of participating companies. Each of these food companies will make a pitch presentation in front of an audience of potential funders, strategic partners, customers and fellow food entrepreneurs at the RutgersX – Accelerating Food Entrepreneurs Conference on November 16, 2015. In addition to the pitching sessions, the conference agenda will also include panel discussions with food industry leaders, conversations with successful entrepreneurs and venture capitalists, and remarks from state and national government leaders… This year’s participating companies are all current or former clients of Rutgers Food Innovation Center and/or clients affiliated with their International Soft Landings Programs. The Rutgers Food Innovation Center recently launched RutgersX, the first business accelerator program at the university… Business accelerators provide a cohort of entrepreneurial companies with a mentoring team that brings professional expertise and a venue in which they can “pitch” their business to a community of angel and venture investors, strategic partners, and retail and food-service customers.
