Elena Santiago, doctoral student in the Nutritional Sciences Graduate Program in the School of Graduate Studies, was awarded the 2017-2018 ConAgra Foods Scholarship by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation. The foundation funds scholarships and awards, as well as public education programs and research grants, and is the largest provider of nutrition and dietetics scholarships.
In May 2017, Santiago earned a master’s degree in nutritional sciences. In addition, she completed a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate Dietetic Internship at the School of Health Professions on the Newark campus. She is currently a first-year doctoral student and teaching assistant. Her research focuses on nutrition education and promotion of health within the community and her goal is to influence effective behavior changes that promote positive healthy lifestyles and prevent negative health outcomes (i.e., obesity-related co-morbidities). She plans to pursue a career in nutrition and dietetics, and aims to develop and implement community nutrition interventions and programs.
Santiago is a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the world’s largest organization of food and nutrition professionals. The academy, considered the only charity devoted exclusively to promoting nutrition and dietetics, is committed to accelerating improvements in global health and well-being through food and nutrition.
