People who want to be germ-free often reach for antibacterial soap but the FDA says “squeaky clean” is good enough. The agency decided to ban these chemicals because it says they may cause more harm than good. Some data has suggested that long-term exposure to some of the active ingredients used in many antibacterial products could pose health risks.
Distinguished professor in the Department of Food Science and extension specialist Donald Schaffner studies cross-contamination in his lab at Rutgers and says that the research shows that some of these chemicals used in antibacterial soaps do have a benefit.
