The 2013 Japan Prize, bestowed by the Japan Prize Foundation to honor work in scientific fields not usually recognized by the Nobel Prize, has been awarded to J. Frederick Grassle, professor emeritus of marine science and founding director of the Rutgers Institute of Marine and Coastal Sciences. Grassle led a 10-year-effort to create a Census of Marine Life, which involved working with 2,700 scientists in 80 countries and cataloging everything living in the ocean, its abundance and location.
