Following round after round of relentless rain over the last two weeks, the idea that a drought could sweep New Jersey just a month ago is dead in the water… “The reason for the changes was due to the very good news that plentiful rains have returned to New Jersey,” said David Robinson, the state climatologist at Rutgers University. “Most of the state has already received from 1 to 2 times the average June rainfall.”… “New Jersey had reached a critical point, where just a few more weeks of dry weather would have put us in a dangerous hole,” Robinson said about last month, which was also recorded as the third warmest May.
Third Graders and the Rutgers Master Gardeners “Seeds to Salad” Team Harvest Bountiful Crops at Whiton Elementary
In mid June the Rutgers Master Gardeners of Somerset County completed their Seeds to Salad program with third graders at Whiton Elementary school located in Branchburg… It took many weeks of preparation to reach the much anticipated “Harvest Day.” In early spring the children planted various types of lettuce, radishes, beets, arugula, Swiss chard, carrots, spinach, onions and were also instructed in how and why it is important to weed, thin and transplant their crops as the plants grew. Master Gardeners also presented weekly lectures about several topics such as soil and soil temperature, “good bugs/bad bugs,” worms, tropism and much more… For many children “Harvest Day” was a highlight as they pulled up all the vegetables they had grown and shortly afterwards enjoyed consuming them at the “Salad Extravaganza”party. The program was a hit with third graders, their teachers and volunteers alike.

How a ‘Ring of Fire’ Could Bring Tropical Rain This Weekend, Wipe Away N.J. Drought Fears
Just three weeks ago, New Jersey was on the precipice of a damaging drought as rainfall deficits climbed to more than half a foot in just a short period of time. No longer… Parts of New Jersey have already received twice their normal amount of rainfall for June, and a “Ring of Fire” weather pattern is expected to slingshot even more to the state this weekend as the remnants of Tropical Storm Bill makes its way across the United States… More than half of New Jersey’s counties have one weather station that has received more than six inches of rain so far in June, or roughly 150 percent of normal. Even the lowest rainfall totals in the state are on pace for average, according to David Robinson, the state climatologist at Rutgers University.

Fresh Produce Now a Walk Away With New Trenton Farmers Market
Phyllis Cooper has trekked to more than her share of farmers markets in search of fresh produce: the Trenton Farmers Market in Lawrence, across the river to Morrisville, Pa., and even the Columbus Farmers Market in Burlington County… Under another tent, Michelle Brill, family and consumer health sciences educator for Rutgers Cooperative Extension was sauteing spinach and handing out samples. Each week, she’ll coordinate with the farmers to bring shoppers simple, seasonal recipes… “The residents around here can’t get to what you see over there at the farms, so we bring it to them,” she said. “And the fact that we’ll be here for months at a time, it’s not a one-shot deal. … Hopefully that will create the behavior change that you’re looking for that will really improve health.”
New Jersey Fruit Meets Local Brewery: Discover Rutgers Strawberry-infused Beer
After a homegrown, homebred strawberry was developed by scientists at Rutgers and unveiled in May, one local company has found a new way for New Jersey residents to enjoy the Rutgers berry: during happy hour. The Carton Brewing Company, located in Atlantic Highlands, debuted the Rutgers Scarlet strawberry-infused beer for a taste test to customers Thursday… “You smell it more than you really taste it, but you really can taste the difference,” said Mike Rooney, a Middletown resident who said he visits Carton Brewing Company weekly… Rutgers scientists worked on creating the Rutgers Scarlet strawberry- which is bred to specifically grow in this state- for about 10 years, and introduced the it in May. Through traditional breeding, the researchers crossed two strawberry varieties to bring together compounds to make the new berry, said Bill Hlubik of the Rutgers Cooperative Extension.
Happenings in the NJ Restaurant World in June
What’s new, what’s changed and … strawberry shortcake- all at Jersey eateries… The delicious, briny New Jersey oysters on the half shell, featured at places such as the Raw Bar at The Lobster House in Cape May, didn’t have far to travel. Thanks to Rutgers University’s Aquaculture Innovation Center in Cape May, healthy crops of baby oyster seeds are being sold to nine oyster farms on the Delaware Bay, places such as Sweet Amalia Oyster Farm, Betsy’s Cape Shore Salts and Dias Creek Oyster Company. Unlike “wild” oysters, usually shucked for canning, these plump and meaty bivalves wind up at high-end seafood restaurants. How tasty are these oysters? Ask Andrew Zimmern- who sampled them, and the food they eat- last summer on his Travel Channel show, “Bizarre Foods America.” The Lobster House is located at 906 Schellengers Landing Road; (609) 884-8296; thelobsterhouse.com
