A single mom of two children under the age 13 with a full-time job working as a Payment Analyst for Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Amanda Martinez doesn’t have time to spare.
Rutgers online CPC® Professional Medical Coding Exam Prep Course through the Office of Continuing Professional Education was a stroke of luck because it allowed her to learn ICD-10, HCPCS II, and CPT around her work/parenting schedule and from the convenience of her home computer. Taught by medical coding expert Leslie Boles, the virtual classes were held on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings.
“Leslie was great,” Amanda said. “Rewriting a person’s medical story in a language of numbers that insurance companies and people all over the world can understand can be scary and overwhelming, but she broke it all down into simple terms I could understand.”
A few months after completing Rutgers 8-week online program, Amanda took and passed the exam. Now, a certified CPC® medical coder, Amanda has the credential and flexibility to earn additional money on her own schedule. She is saving to buy a house. “Getting this one certificate has opened so many doors for me!”
Plus, Amanda enjoys the work. “You need to know anatomy, understand medical terminology, and decipher the doctor’s description of what happened to each patient. I like that coding is putting together the pieces of a puzzle.”
