Over the past four years, the Rutgers Cooperative Extension (RCE) Water Resources Program has partnered with the Camden County Municipal Utilities Authority to address stormwater management issues throughout the City of Camden. Through this partnership and the efforts of the Camden SMART (Stormwater Management and Resource Training) Initiative, over 30 green infrastructure projects have been constructed capturing over 3 million gallons of stormwater runoff each year.
For the summer of 2014 the Camden SMART partners will begin constructing additional 20 green infrastructure projects with funding from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. The green infrastructure projects will include rain gardens, cisterns, stormwater planters, and permeable pavements. This continued effort to capture, filter, and infiltrate stormwater reduces the frequency of combined sewer overflows and protects and improves New Jersey’s waterways.
