Rutgers Cooperative Extension’s Water Resources Program has been working with Hamilton Township in Mercer County to evaluate watershed and stormwater management issues and develop recommendations for improving and protecting water resources in the community. As part of the project, a demonstration rain garden was built at Hamilton High School West to manage stormwater runoff from the rooftop before it discharges to the storm drain system. A rain garden is a landscaped, shallow depression that is designed to intercept, treat and infiltrate stormwater at the source before it becomes runoff. Watch the video to see personnel from the township’s Department of Public Works and Hamilton High School West students build the rain garden from scratch.
