Another round of light snow is expected Wednesday, followed by another wave of arctic cold, according to the weather briefing. The temperatures could match Sunday night’s lows, with wind chill values around 10 below zero Wednesday night into Thursday…..
Climate May Have Fluke on the Move
Like every other living organism, fish just want to be comfortable. That’s why, in the face of warming ocean water, they may be on the move. Dr. Malin Pinsky of Rutgers University, who studies the effects of climate change in fisheries, said many species are shifting to the north at a time when the climate has been warming… “We’re seeing a climate fingerprint in many of these shifts in species distribution,” Dr. Pinsky said… Dr. Pinsky and Rutgers have just begun a joint research project with Stony Brook University, George Mason University and the University of North Carolina to understand whether a changing climate played a role in the shift and what the economic and regulatory impacts will be.
More Snow Possible For the Shore This Weekend
Winter appears poised to become stormier in New Jersey… “I think it’s safe to say that there is a storm that’s looming for Saturday with the potential of delivering a plowable snow,” said David A. Robinson, the New Jersey state climatologist… And it appears that this winter may more closely resemble last winter — the seventh snowiest on record in New Jersey- for a while, according to Robinson, a snow cover expert and geography professor at Rutgers University.
Snow Could Slow Wednesday and Thursday Rush Hours
Drivers beware: The upcoming clipper snowstorm will impact the Wednesday afternoon commute, according to the National Weather Service. “It looks like it could be a two rush-hour event,” said David A. Robinson, the New Jersey state climatologist. After the snow stops, “it could still leave roads pretty icy on Thursday morning.” He speculated that “you could be talking about delayed (school) openings on Thursday, but it is going to get above freezing Thursday and that should clean things up.”
Wintry weather possible next week
Winter kicked into higher gear in New Jersey this week with icy Arctic air, frigid wind chills and a little snow. You could call it practice… “It looks like there might be two opportunities for precipitation next week,” said David A. Robinson, the New Jersey state climatologist… Friday’s snowfall amounted to “a dusting to a half-inch” in most of the state, said Robinson, a Rutgers University geography professor and snow cover expert. “It was not much.”
Study: Climate change affecting fish movement
According to a study being conducted by Rutgers University, climate change seems to be pushing several species of fish and crustaceans northward along the east and west coasts of North America. The movement could have serious effects on birds, marine mammals and those who depend on fishing for food and income. “As temperatures have warmed in the waters off our coasts, animals with a low tolerance for that warming have just picked up and shifted,” says Malin Pinsky, a marine biologist at Rutgers who is leading a team researching these shifts.
