Cranberry growers are being asked to help fund Rutgers University research to develop heartier and more productive varieties… The state Department of Agriculture will hold a hearing Thursday on a proposal to raise the self-imposed grower fee, called a production assessment, from 10 cents a barrel to 40 cents. The 10 a.m. to noon hearing will be at the Philip E. Marucci Center for Blueberry and Cranberry Research in Chatsworth, where the research is performed… The proposed assessment increase is tied to a $750,000 reduction in annual federal and state research funding for the center, part of Rutgers. The money was eliminated in 2010 and never restored. It was not part of the state Department of Agriculture budget.
