Three years ago, ecologist Alek Modjeski began planning a maritime forest on less than a half acre at Fletcher Lake. Now, nearly a year after superstorm Sandy devastated the Shore area, his small forest, completed Sept. 28, is being hailed as an example of storm defense for coastal lakes…The plants were purchased from Brock Farms in Freehold and the Pineland’s Nursery and Supply in Columbus. The Pinelands Nursery also donated 2,800 plugs of dune grass. On Sept. 26, volunteers from the Monmouth County Master Gardeners trained by Rutgers Cooperative Extension helped with planting. "It’s a great design. We’re trying to prevent pollution and soil erosion. Our coastal lakes are in jeopardy," said Bill Sciarappa, agricultural and resource management agent and county extension leader for Rutgers University.
