For the last several years, things have been relatively stable in the summer flounder fishery, especially when you consider that the recreational sector was on the brink of being shut down in 2008. Back then, with livelihoods and a way of life at stake, The Save the Summer Flounder Fishery Fund (SSFFF) came into existence and enlisted a top fisheries scientist, Dr. Mark Maunder, to confirm what fishermen had known all along – that the stock was much healthier than the government claimed…Hueth said the SSFFF and PMAFS will continue to work with Drs. Maunder and Martell, and Dr. Eleanor Bochenek of Rutgers, on sex-structured models for summer flounder. "We want to present a model at the next peer review with information that will provide stability in the industry for years to come," Hueth said.
