The concept of Rutgers Gardens as a botanical garden began with the formation of Rutgers University’s Cook Campus (formerly known as the College of Agriculture and the Rutgers Scientific School), beginning in 1864, and the development of the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station, beginning in 1880… According to Dr. Bruce Crawford, director of Rutgers gardens, “To embrace this remarkable history, while looking towards the next 100 years, the Gardens is unveiling a new mission statement: ‘Rutgers Gardens cultivates inquisitive minds, great plants, and inspired gardening through educational exploration and enjoyment’ as well as a new tagline, ‘Rutgers Gardens–Where the Future of Horticulture Is Grounded in Our Past.'”
